Smart glass is the common name for such types of glass that are able to
change their optical or other physical properties. It can work when the
external conditions (lighting and temperature) change or when an electric
current is applied.
This article focuses on Polymeric Liquid Crystal Devices (LCD). This is
the name of glass, which can be transparent or frosted, depending on your
desire. In the off state, this is the usual frosted glass. But it is necessary
to connect it to the electrical network, and the glass becomes transparent.
There are two main types of smart glass: LCD and Suspended Particle
Devices (SPD). The first technology is based on a special layer of polymer,
which is located between the layers of ordinary glass. While electricity is
applied, the crystals of the polymer become liquid and transparent. When the
current supply stops, the crystals freeze. In this case, the polymer acquires a
heterogeneous structure. It causes the scattering of light rays.
Suspended particle devices have a high switching speed between states.
They are transparent when being connected to electricity. But in the off state,
they have a dark color in contrast to the frosted LCD glass.
The smart glass that can change the level of transparency can be very
useful at home or in a commercial organization. It is an excellent material for
the manufacture of screens, partitions, and doors. When it is switched off, it
will ensure privacy. But when privacy is not needed, you can turn it on to
increase the visual space of the room and the amount of light.
